Volunteers wanted: Help clean up
state lands on National Trails Day
OLYMPIA Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invite the public to join volunteers and partner organizations to celebrate National Trails Day® on Saturday, June 5, on state trust lands across Washington.
DNR staff and hundreds of volunteers will repair trails, fix bridges, clear brush, remove invasive plants, and a host of other projects to get trails ready for summer. These work parties are taking place on some of the trails that make Washington such an exceptional state for outdoor recreation.
National Trails Day is a great way for the public to show their appreciation for these special places, said Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark. On almost any weekend, you can find volunteers giving their time to help on state lands. Volunteers play a key role in the success of DNRs recreation program.
DNR-managed lands provide 1,100 miles of trails, 143 recreation sites, and a variety of landscapes throughout Washington state. Recreational opportunities include hiking, hunting, fishing, horseback riding, camping, motorized vehicle riding, mountain biking, and boating.
In 2009, volunteers logged in more than 73,000 hours on DNR-managed recreation areas maintaining and cleaning trails, campgrounds, and other facilities; working on restoration projects; doing minor repairs; and even providing heavy equipment for large-scale tasks. The value of last years volunteer hours amounts to more than $950,000. DNRs Recreation Program uses these hours as in-kind match when applying for most grant funding.
National Trails Day®
National Trails Day was created by the American Hiking Society in 1993. National
Trails Day brings together people who enjoy trails and the outdoors to
participate in trail work projects, educational workshops, trail dedication
ceremonies and other celebrations.
National Trails Day Event Schedule
for DNR-managed Lands
All events take place on June 5, except for the Les Hilde/Harry Osborn State
Forest trail cleanup, which will be June 12. More information is at

Buck Creek Trail
North of White Salmon
9 a.m. to midday. (Followed by a half-day mountain bike ride with celebration)
Join volunteers from the Northwest Trail Alliance and other groups to repair the
trails and remove brush.
Directions: From White Salmon, go north on Hwy. 14 for a couple of miles. Turn
right onto Hwy. 141 and proceed north. Drive about 2 miles. Turn left at the
sign for Northwestern Lake. Follow the road down the hill and across the bridge.
Meet at the four-way intersection with Lakeview Road.

Capitol State Forest
South of Olympia
9 a.m. to afternoon. Lunch break at 1:30 p.m.
Join volunteers from the Friends of Capitol Forest to work on multiple trail
improvement projects, including a small reroute and fixing continually wet
areas.
Directions: Meet at the Y
intersection of Waddell Creek Road and Sherman Valley Road. Take Delphi Road
from Olympia/north or take 128th Ave. from Little Rock/south.

Elbe Hills State Forest
Near the town of Elbe,
west of Mount Rainier National Park
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Join the
Pierce County Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of Washington to help
clean up and repair trails.
Directions: Meet at Sahara Creek Campground.

Little River Trail
Near Port Angeles, Olympic National Park
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Help volunteers get a section of the trail reopened for horses and pack stock
following winter storm damage. Co-sponsors include the
Olympic Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of Washington, Grey
Wolves Trail Crew, and the Olympic National Park. Join volunteers from these
organizations to repair a section of the trail that had been closed to horses
and pack stock due to winter storm damage. Volunteers can also help install a
new bridge.

Loomis Natural Resources Conservation Area
Okanogan County
9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Join DNR staff and volunteers from the Oroville Chapter of the Pacific Northwest
Trail Association for trail maintenance work on 2-1/2 to 3 miles of the Snowshoe
Mountain Trail, including brush removal, tread work, and repairing erosion and
water bars.
Directions: Meet in the town of Loomis at the
Kwik Stop promptly at 9 a.m.

Reiter Foothills Forest
Gold Bar
9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Help install a new kiosk and other signs.
Directions: Meet at the Reiter gravel pit. Travel U.S. Hwy. 2 to the southeast
outskirts of Gold Bar. Turn north on Reiter Road and, in less than a mile, you
will come to a split in the road. Continue to your right on Reiter Road to the
old gravel pit/parking area on the left.

Tiger Mountain/Little Si
Issaquah/North Bend
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Join volunteers from the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust to help with several
trail projects in the Tiger Mountain and Little Si areas.

Les Hilde/Harry Osborne Trail
East of Sedro-Woolley on Highway 20
9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Join volunteers from the
Skagit Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of Washington to work on
several projects, including installing a large kiosk at the trailhead and
working out on the trail to clear, remove brush, and repair damage.
Directions: From Sedro-Woolley, head east on Hwy. 20 for 10.4 miles. Turn left
on Cabin Creek Road. Go 0.2 miles. Turn right on Hamilton Cemetery Road. Go 0.4
miles and turn left on Medford Road; go 1.1 miles to trailhead.

Recreation on DNR-managed lands
DNR manages more than 5 million acres of state-owned forest, aquatic,
agricultural, conservation and urban lands. Most recreation on these lands takes
place in the 2.2 million acres of forests that DNR manages as state trust lands.
By law, state trust lands are managed to produce income for schools,
universities, prisons, state mental hospitals, community colleges, local
services in many counties, and the states General Fund. State trust lands are
also managed to provide fish and wildlife habitat and educational and
recreational opportunities.
