Back Country Horsemen of Washington State Leave No Trace Program Winner of 12th Annual Coalition for Recreational Trails Achievement Award

The Coalition for Recreational Trails and the American Recreation Coalition Award Ceremony was held at a special Capitol Hill ceremony in Washington, D.C. on June 8, 2010 as part of the celebration of Great Outdoors Week 2010. Back Country Horsemen of Washington State (BCHW) received the 12th Annual Achievement Award in the category of Environment and Wildlife Compatibility for its Leave No Trace Program. Jane Byram, Leave No Trace Chair, accepted this prestigious award on behalf of BCHW, presented by U.S. Representative Jim Moran of Virginia, who chairs the Interior Appropriations Committee.

The Leave No Trace is a national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when riding horses in the back country, hiking, camping, picnicking, snowshoeing, running, biking, hunting, paddling, fishing, skiing or climbing. The program strives to educate, encourage, and solicit active participation in the wise and sustaining use of the back country resources by horsemen and the general public. Its principles are to: plan and prepare; travel and camp on durable surfaces; dispose of waste properly; leave what you find; minimize campfire impacts; respect wildlife; be considerate of other visitors.
